How to Lead with Humanity and Get the Best from your People Too

Artificial intelligence can analyse data, draft reports and automate tasks with impressive speed. But when it comes to leading people, building trust and responding with empathy, the human skills that matter most are still irreplaceable: emotional intelligence, and the understanding of nuance and human reactions that you need to apply it.

In modern workplaces, the best leaders understand how people feel, what motivates them and how to create an environment where others can do their best work. Emotional intelligence helps leaders connect, communicate and adapt in a way that technology simply can’t, and is the only way to get the very best from the people you’re leading.

Here’s why: at its core, emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise and manage your own emotions, while also understanding the emotions of others. It includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. These are not “soft” skills in the sense of being optional, either - they are essential skills for anyone who wants to lead effectively. Why emotional intelligence matters so much.

Why emotional intelligence matters so much

People are more likely to support and follow a leader they trust. That trust is built through positive feelings that are engendered through the consistency, empathy and good communication that their leader demonstrates. Over time they learn to believe that their leader’s words match their actions, that they will listen to concerns, that they’re on their side, and will always act for the best.

This matters in everyday situations as much as in times of change. A team that feels heard and supported is more likely to stay motivated, share ideas and work collaboratively and proactively. On the other hand, leadership that lacks emotional awareness can create tension, reduce morale and leave people feeling disconnected.

And emotional intelligence is what allows leaders to navigate difficult conversations successfully. When handled with care and respect, even the most challenging feedback can strengthen relationships instead of damaging them, and lead to better outcomes for the individual and the team as a whole.

The key skills to develop

One of the most important parts of emotional intelligence is knowledge and understanding of yourself. Leaders need to have that self-awareness to gauge how their own mood, stress levels and habits are affecting the people around them. If you know you tend to become impatient when under pressure, for example, you can take steps to pause, reflect and respond more effectively.

Self-regulation is closely linked to this. It is the ability to stay composed, especially when situations become difficult. Leaders do not need to have perfect control over every feeling, but they do need to manage their reactions in a way that gives others confidence and maintains that trust.

Empathy is another essential skill. This means being willing to see things from another person’s point of view. It does not mean agreeing with everything, but it does mean listening properly and taking people’s experiences seriously. Empathetic leaders are often better at resolving conflict, supporting team members and making decisions that take the wider picture into account.

Communication also plays a major role. Clear, respectful communication helps avoid misunderstandings and makes it easier for people to work together. Good leaders know when to speak, when to listen and how to adapt their style depending on the person or situation.

How to strengthen your leadership

Like any skill, emotional intelligence can be developed over time. It starts with paying attention: to your own behaviour, to the people around you and to the effect your words and actions have on others.

Reflection is a useful habit. After meetings, conversations or challenging situations, ask yourself what went well and what could have been handled differently. This habit will help you to recognise patterns and improve your responses.

Feedback is just as important. Ask trusted colleagues or team members how your leadership comes across. Sometimes the things we intend to communicate are not always how we are received. Honest feedback can help you grow in ways that self-reflection alone may not.

It also helps to stay curious about people. Leadership is easier when you take the time to understand what motivates others, what concerns them and what support they need. Small acts of interest and kindness often make a bigger difference than grand gestures.

Leading with humanity

Leadership is about creating trust, showing empathy and helping people move forward together – and you certainly don’t need to have all the answers, all of the time. Emotional intelligence gives leaders the awareness and confidence to know that, and be the same leader in times of uncertainty as well as success.

As workplaces continue to change and embrace many new and often mind-blowing technological capabilities, the leaders who stand out will be those who treasure and nurture those emotional intelligence skills and apply them daily. Technology may change how we work, but it does not change the importance of being human; and the ability to listen, understand and respond thoughtfully will always be at the heart of strong leadership. It’s something that artificial intelligence simply can’t replace.
